THE UNIT

Background

The Neuro-orthopeadic spinal service was founded in 1995 by Mr Ben Taylor, Mr Lester Wilson, Mr Alan Crockard and Mr Andrew Ransford. It is now more succinctly known as the spinal unit. The unit maintains the ethos of both neuro and orthopaedic surgeons working together to provide the best spinal care.

Following the retirement of Alan Crockard and Andrew Ransford from active surgical practice we were joined by Mr James Allibone and Mr Stewart Tucker. More recently our capabilities have been enhanced by Mr Adrian Casey, Mr Tom Ember and Mr Hilali Nordeen.

Our approach to spinal treatments is always to focus on the patient and quality of care, integrating the expertise of the most appropriate specialists to produce the best outcome for the patient. This means different spine specialists working collaboratively in one centre; orthopaedic spine surgeons with neurosurgeons, anaesthesists with neuroradiologists in a pain clinic. Additionally, appropriate referrals between spine specialists within the Centre should mean that patients no longer have to worry if they are seeing the right kind of health care professional, knowing that all are fully supported by the latest advances in diagnosis and treatment techniques and technologies in the various specialties. The Centre offers comprehensive spinal care, treating conditions that may be genetic, result from trauma, or the wear and tear of aging.

The aim throughout is to get a clear rapid assessment and answer to your spine problems and make an integrated treatment plan, whether surgery is needed or not. In most cases treatment will involve skilled rehabilitation using the most up to date techniques, and some of the most respected specialists in pain medicine to aid rehabilitation.
